The story of the project
Literacy is a big issue for the adults in Manamoc.
Charities such as Andres Soriano Foundation (ASF) and Amanpulo (Villa for a Cause) have done excellent work helping the small communities on these islands. However, illiteracy is a big issue. With projects focussing primarily on the education of high school students, I wanted to do something for the youngest children where a love of reading could potentially blossom, flourish and continue for the rest of their lives.
Impact of COVID-19
When Manamoc's elementary school was shut for 450 consecutive days, there was no remote learning infrastructure. Nook bookshelves were wheeled around to children's homes and the books used as a form of modular learning.
Stepping out from COVID-19
The nooks remained vital for the children both inside and outside the classroom. Children in Years 1 and 2 were also benefiting from the reading nooks.
During a visit in October 2022, I watched the children interacting with the books and loved hearing them read to me. I had a meeting with the Principal of the school, which resulted in a plan to extend the project to Years 4, 5 and 6.
I raised £5,000 for the benefit of the older children. I supplied over 500 English and local language books, bean bags and shelving, transporting all of the materials to the island.
Dare to dream
By the Spring of 2023 reading nooks were set up in all classrooms, allowing children to enjoy books for the duration of elementary school at least.
